Social media blogger Chris Brogan hits it right on the head, not just for realtors, but also for journalists. Realtors and journalists share one thing in common – they should all be the experts of their local area. To develop and exploit that expertise, Chris recommends:

taking and posting tons of pictures

interviewing people – learning their stories

creating hyperlocal news and information sites

creating niche sites to build online communities

Simple? No.

An essential step to growing your business in these challenging times? Absolutely.

I’m going back to work Monday, two weeks to the day I last stepped foot on the 29th floor at the Scripps Center. After 9 days of a long journey to Texas and back, I’m watching football and basketball, cleaning out e-mail and catching up with everything I’ve missed.

I subscribe to about 30 newsletters that keep me in touch with breaking news and trends in journalism, technology and social media. Most of these newsletters contain multiple posts – some like Mashable’s contain a dozen posts on some days. Do the math of all these posts in all these newsletters, and I found I had a lot of catching up to do. So that’s what I did today.

What’s in it for you? I’ve bookmarked 24 great posts that anyone in my business should read. They’re the best of the best, at least of what I’ve found from the past 2 weeks, and they’re worth your time. You can see them for yourself by checking either of my two bookmark feeds, via Publish2 or Delicious.

I add more bookmarks to these 2 feeds almost every workday, so feel free to subscribe to either or both. I can’t promise to make you smarter every day, but maybe I can save you some time in getting to the good stuff. If there’s a good post I missed, post a comment and I’ll take a look.

I’ve got a handful of New Years goals. Some deal with home and family improvements, and I’ll keep those at home. But there are two I’ll share here:

Run a marathon. In early 2009, I started running. In my first 44 years, I never stuck with any specific exercise routine for a long period of time. Now I can say I’ve changed that, and here’s the evidence via my MapMyRun training log and profile. I thank the amazing “Echo Running Club” and my family for supporting this great journey. In May, I plan to run my first-ever full-marathon: the Cincinnati Flying Pig.

Blog more often, perhaps daily. My Cincinnati neighbor and friend competitor friend Mandy Jenkins is social media editor for the Cincinnati Enquirer and Cincinnati.com. She’s a busy lady at work and home, yet she finds time to produce a smart media-focused blog called Zombie Journalism. Many of my peers also blog. I should be doing the same. As Stuart Smalley once said, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and people like me.”

I’m not sure if Stuart ever believed his own catch-phrase, but I’ll choose it believe it for me nonetheless. I’ve always said in all my years of blogging, I’ll keep doing it even if no one reads it. So back to blogging I go. I’ll do my best to post 3-4 times a week, with the primary topics being journalism, social media and running.

She’s including my thoughts in her capstone paper in order to graduate this month. Good luck Dea – it’s a whole new world out there for all the grads these days. But there’s tremendous opportunity for enterprising young journalists like yourself.

I’ve been a blogger for 6 or 7 years now, in one way or another. Back when I was in TV, I used to blog a lot more than I do now. Now that I’m working in online media, I have less appetite for blogging. I spend so much time at work on the computer, I don’t want to come home and write for fun. Plus with Twitter and Facebook now, I can communicate what’s on mind more quickly and efficiently, reaching more people, than I could with my own blogs.

Things have changed quite a bit, haven’t they?

I decided, though, I needed to reclaim some online presence for myself — my own space for my own brand, such as it is. I’ve never been an artist or a programmer. I’m a content guy; I can write. I wanted some place that I could publish a stream of all my posts everywhere else, as well as a place I could write longer-form material (like this post).

There’s something new out there called microblogs (actually, Twitter is a microblog at 140 characters a post). But I’m talking about something a bit more robust – specifically competing services Tumblr and Posterous. Both are admirable and interesting attempts to create platforms for blogging and social networking. But neither one did what I wanted to do. My Tumblr page replicates some of the experience you’re getting on this site, but I found less flexibility and fewer features. My Posterous page is more simple. Posterous is all about making it easy for you to post something to the site, no matter what kind of device you’re using, but it’s not as easy to aggregate outside content on your Posterous page.

So I’m back to an old friend Wordpress. I’m aggregating a life-stream of what I post in the middle column, via my Friendfeed. That Friendfeed stream incorporates what I post on my Facebook and Twitter accounts and the social-bookmarking site Delicious. The bookmarks are great for clipping interesting stories I find on the web, and saving them to read at a later time.

I’m an online guy. I need an online space where the content is current and useful, and where I can learn and experiment with design and code, beyond what I know how to do now. Here’s that site. Your feedback is always welcome here. Post a comment, or send me an e-mail at chipmahaney@gmail.com.
